Unmanned aircraft, aka drones, delivering packages directly to your door? That's not the future - that's NOW! Samuel Bennett, Independent Insurance Professional and Instructor for the National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research talked about the quickly expanding use of drone technology in everything from farmers checking on their crops and livestock to improved weather forecasting, to even the use of solar powered drones to provide global internet access.

Bennett explained the US is significantly behind on the various applications of drones and that government and industry are moving quickly to catch up with the rest of the world. According to the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, the FAA is supposed to have a plan in place by September of this year to "safely integrate civil drones into the U.S. airspace system."

Obviously, with all this heightened interest in the commercial use of drones comes a plethora of questions about insurance coverage. He provided a brief overview of how the use of drones is causing the insurance industry to consider unique coverage issues and explained some of the proposed changes to the ISO Commercial General Liability policy brought about by drone use.

This topic is definitely one to watch for future developments.
