The 2020 Earthquake Insight Field Trip through the New Madrid region will be held on Friday afternoon, April 3, through Sunday afternoon, April 5. There is no cost other than personal travel expenses.

This is a unique and valuable experience for those in industries at risk from earthquakes (transportation, planning, communications, logistics, utilities, government, equity and investment, insurance, and many others), professional geoscientists, first-responders, interested lay people, and students.

The field trip begins in the St. Louis area and includes Kaskaskia, Ill.; Ste. Genevieve and New Madrid, Mo.; Reelfoot Lake, Tenn.; as well as other sites in southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, and western Tennessee and Kentucky.

The route includes geological evidence of the geologic and earthquake history of the region, as well as sites important to the human stories of the 1811-12 New Madrid earthquakes. The field-trip route is about 500 miles long, and will include two overnight stops.

Those who are interested in details about the 2020 Earthquake Insight Field Trip should contact Phyllis Steckel at psteckel@charter.net or Jeff Briggs at jeff.briggs@sema.dps.mo.gov.

Please feel free to pass this information on to others who may be interested.

In the past, the annual Earthquake Insight Field Trips were subsidized by the US Geological Survey. However, in 2020 as in the past several years, professional geoscientists will volunteer their time and expertise to lead the event.

Continuing Education units (CEUs) are available through the University of Missouri (administrative costs may apply).
